For its first two seasons, Friday Night Lights was the little show that could, repeatedly dodging cancellation in spite of floundering ratings, much to the delight of the series’ small but fervent fan base. Then, miraculously, a shared-rights deal between NBC and DirecTV buoyed Friday Night Lights through three more seasons. In that time, FNL has used the fictional town of Dillon, Texas and its intense relationship with high-school football as a jumping-off point for human drama both outsized and intimate, much of it centering on the family of Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife, Tami (Connie Britton). Plotlines and actors have come and gone as the show’s high-school characters have aged out of the series, but Chandler and Britton’s onscreen relationship has endured, providing FNL with its foundation and heart. Connie Britton has described the series finale of Friday Night Lights as “quite perfect”.

Britton, who plays Tami Taylor, claimed that the last three episodes of the show are “incredibly special” and “are going to be extraordinary moments in television”.

She also revealed that the finale will be a mixture of resolution and unanswered questions.

“The goal really was to give the audience a sense of where every character would be going,” she told the New York Post. “Not in an overly neat way. I think there will be a lot of questions left hanging but you will also see the next trajectory for each one of these characters.

“It’s that beautiful thing where on one hand you’re saying goodbye, but on the other, you’re wondering where they’re going next. I think it’s quite perfect.”

Typically season premieres are a cause for celebration, and while that’s especially true for the return of “Friday Night Lights,” tonight’s fifth season premiere is silmultaneously bittersweet since it is the last one we’ll ever get. The best show you are still not watching will get a big Texas send-off in thirteen weeks when its series finale graces the airwaves.

But there are a baker’s dozen of amazing episodes between now and then, and to find out what lies ahead I turned to the show’s star, Connie Britton. In addition to creating one of the best mother’s in TV history with Tami Taylor, Connie has used her TV clout to champion several charities, including The African Children’s Choir.

It was at their recent NYC concert that I caught up with Connie (and her bestie Carla Gugino) to learn all about her work with the kids, what you can expect from “Friday Night Lights’” series finale and what her all-time favorite scene is. (Read More…)
